The oldest known ancestor of the Star lineage is José Cruz Echeverria, who made muzzle-loading firearms in the 19th century. When firearms came into being, Eibar retained its edge as a weapons manufacturing center. The only markings on my barrel are the last three digits of the serial number. The Eibar region has been a center of weapons development and manufacture for centuries, with "Spanish Steel" historically being a selling point with its reputation for quality and durability. I am the opposite of an expert regarding the Star Model B but am assuming that during the rebuild the barrel was replaced. The bore is somewhere between excellent and mint. The sights are actually fairly good for a military pistol manufactured in 1943. It fired all 50 shots but had 2-3 stovepipes and one instance where the slide did not quite return to battery. At 25 meters my average groups were about 6 to 8 inches. I took the Star to the range a couple of days ago and put a box of Blazer 115 grain through it. Unless they brought some Bulgarian contract Star Model B's in as an import pre-1968? American soldiers didn't likely have any contact with Bulgarian soldiers so likely no reason for them to be here as bringbacks. It occurred to me that the Bulgarian contract Star might be a very difficult pistol to find in original trim. The rework quality is mediocre from a cosmetic standpoint but I'm betting that it functions well. I took a few pictures and am including them here. The Bulgarian rework showed up at my dealer today and I was able to pick it up. the correct appearance has the tail of the eagle sitting between the WaA and the 251, or the WaA and the D20. The correct Waffenamts have the bottom of the eagle dividing the WaA and next three characters in the middle.

STAR PISTOL SERIAL NUMBERS SERIAL NUMBER
One should be able to simply reference the serial number of any pistol he was considering to get an answer. I guess that the similarity of the Bulgarian contract Stars to those actually used by the Germans was too much (and the cost attractively low), and someone boinked a number of them with the phony Waffenamt marking I have shown in this post.

I will post some photos and a range report when it arrives. I went ahead and ordered one to have something to play with and for the purpose of examining one hands on. So, RGuns is selling Bulgarian rebuilt wartime Star model B's for $325. BostonMark's site has good photos of the various wartime Star Model B's, including the actual serial number ranges for the Bulgarian and German contract Stars: The two correct Waffenamt markings for German wartime Star Model B's are eagle/WaA251 and eagle/WaAD20. This is an easy one to remember as bad, as the second A (the capitalized letter) sits centered below the eagle, and it should not. I heisted a photo from one of the auctions and am including it here as an example of a fake eagle/WaA251 marking. Anyway, on GunBroker there are auctions for a pair of Star Model B's with "Nazi marking". I am interested in picking up a German used Star Model B but have not found a good example yet.

In particular I have been following the auctions of Spanish and French pistols used by the Germans.
